: The Roles of ESG and the State for a Transition Society: Promoting Dialogues on Urban Commons

The Architecture & Urban Research Institute (AURI) organized the "2023 International Joint E.S.G. Conference" on Tuesday, August 1, at Community House Masil in Myeong-dong, Seoul. The event was held in collaboration with the Korea Legislation Research Institute, Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements, Seoul National University Asia Center, and the Research Center on the Commons and Sustainable Society at Jeju National University. This conference was held under the theme "The Roles of ESG and the State for a Transition Society: Promoting Dialogues on Urban Commons'' and featured a variety of presentations and discussions on urban commons.
The first session, titled "Transition Society and the State," began with a presentation by Michel Bauwens, the founder of the P2P Foundation, on "The Vital Role of Urban Commons for Ecological Residence and Social Pacification," followed by a presentation by Beom-cheol Kwon, the editor of Munhwa/Gwahak [Culture/Science], on "Commoning the State: The Commons as a Policy and a Power." In the second session on "The Sustainable Society and Urban Commons," Thom Armstrong, the CEO of CHF BC, gave a presentation on "Building the Urban Commons through Cooperatives and Community Land Trusts," and Professor In Kwon Park of Seoul National University presented on "The Urban Common as an Inclusive Space: Case Study of the Gyeongui Line Common Grounds in Seoul." Professor Bae-Gyoon Park, the Director of the Center for Asian Urban Societies at Seoul National University; Professor Suh-Hyun Park at the Research Center on the Commons and Sustainable Society, Jeju National University; Gi-bin Hong, Director of the Global Political and Economic Research Institute; Soojeong Seo, Senior Research Fellow at AURI; Jongbin Kim, Vice President of Deoham, and Sung Jin Yun, Associate Research Fellow at the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements, served as discussants in the first and second sessions. The following third session comprised a roundtable discussion, and the conference concluded with closing remarks from Youngbum Reigh, the President of AURI.
