2023 AURI National Hanok Center Hanok Forum
: K-Village, Contemplating Hanok Villages

On April 28 (Friday), the Architecture & Urban Research Institute (AURI) and the Architectural Institute of Korea held the "2023 AURI National Hanok Center Hanok Forum" at BEXCO in Busan. This forum, with the theme of "K-Village, Contemplating Hanok Villages," aimed to examine the current status and considerations in the planning phase of hanok villages and discuss effective strategies for promoting hanok villages.

The first presentation, by Boram Bang, a researcher at AURI, discussed the "Status and Challenges of Hanok Village Development Projects." Based on surveys on the perception and demand characteristics of hanok villages, the presentation proposed future tasks for hanok village development projects. The second presentation, by Jaeyong Lee, the Head of Office Beta, introduced the "Master Plan for Goyang Changneung Historic and Cultural Village." The presentation highlighted the planning process for a hanok village master plan in an area adjacent to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Seooreung and explained the key issues involved. The third presentation, by Bonhwan Gu, the CEO of ORn Architects, examined the "Progress of Hanok Village Development Projects in Hwaseong Taean 3rd District." The presentation explored insights on street configuration and parking issues to preserve the unique characteristics of hanok villages. Lastly, Seong Kim, the Team Leader of Seoul Metropolitan City's Architectural Asset Policy Team, presented the "Expansion of Hanok Village Development Projects According to Seoul Hanok 4.0 Policy," unveiling the key contents of the project and global strategies for hanok village development.

The comprehensive discussion was chaired by SeongLyong Ryoo, a professor at Korea University. The participants, comprised of Juhwan Go, CEO of SaehanTMC, Seon-ho Ahn, a professor in the Department of Architecture at Wonkwang University, Yusik Kim, Head of Seoul Metropolitan City's Hanok Policy Division, and Chihoo Shin, a researcher at AURI, shared various opinions aimed at revitalizing the hanok industry.
